"Knee-jerk" Jones rips on Brett Favre.
Jets' RB Thomas Jones, who led the AFC in rushing this season, had a few harsh words for QB Brett Favre while speaking on a radio program this week.
Jones basically said that due to Favre's diminished performance in the last 5 games of the season when the Jets went 1-4 and sunk their hopes of a playoff berth, Favre should've been benched. "We're a team and we win together ... but at the same time, you can't turn the ball over and expect to win," stated Jones.
We'll WIN together, but I won't LOSE with you. Nice one, Jones. I won't dignify this blog with his remaining comments. Suffice it to say, I'm disappointed in Jones. And here's one problem I have with Jones' comments: Mr. Thomas Jones should first look at his own diminished performance in the last 4 games before he opens his mouth:
DEN - 16 carries, 138 yards
@SF - 10, 56
BUF - 20, 78
@SEA - 17, 67
MIA - 10, 23

Team, carries, yards. Does Jones not see HIS OWN diminished performance in the last 4 games?
Safety Kerry Rhodes also made the comment that if Favre is committed to off-season preparation then he should come back. First of all, Favre is known for working out strenuously in the off-season, particularly in his later years (hiring a personal trainer). Yes, he has skipped mini-camps here and there in the past but Favre is not "known" for cutting corners regarding training (another allegation that came out in the news this week). Maybe Brett's known for not liking to workout but that doesn't translate into NOT working out.
Mr. Rhodes - your team's passing defense was ranked 4th worst in allowing 235 yards per game...while allowing 3,752 total yard to be run up on you during the season. I reading those stats right? Those NFL stat tables get confusing (my cousin Scotty will correct me if I'm wrong). Rhodes, how did that stat above help your team's performance? I remember watching Favre pass for 6 TDS against a "lousy" Arizona team early in the season and Arizona came back and scored 35 points (Jets won, 56-35). Great defense, Rhodes. You guys (the defense) MAYBE played two complete games all season. Shut up.
There was also talk by "unnamed sources" - that Favre and Coach Mangini didn't get along (purported by FoxSports.com's Jay "Unnamed Sources" Glazer), and that Favre didn't "hang" with the other Jets' players. Or that Bill Cowher wasn't interested in the Jets' head coach job because he didn't want to coach Favre.
The same FoxSports.com article stated that Brett's teammatess think the legendary quarterback needed to be held accountable for crucial mistakes down the stretch as the team missed a playoff berth.
What about everyone else on the team? The coaches? Jones, Rhodes, the O-line, the defense line and the Dbacks? How did Favre get to be the only player on the team? How come a QB shouldn't get all the credit for the wins but should get the credit for the losses? I remember after one loss earlier in the year, afterwards Kicker Returner and all-around player Leon Washington was "crying" about all HIS effort (he did have a great game) and how deflating it was to lose. And I immediately thought to myself, 'what a ME, ME, and ME statement'. It's funny...all this is coming out now. Had the Jets made the playoffs, you'd hear nothing. If Favre and Mangini were fighting, why does Mangini name his newborn son after Brett? And Brett explained early in the season that he didn't "hang" with many of the Packers' players in his final years with the team and he said he wasn't going to "hang" with Jets' players. He's older. Been there done that. He has a family. He's adjusting to a new environment, new home, new team. He was too busy learning the playbook to go out and party with the guys. So what.
And Cowher has said that he's sticking to his guns and doesn't want to consider coaching until 2010, and that he wanted the freedom to bring in his own personnel. Is he lying? Maybe.
The Jets' management and players have stated they want Brett back. They could change their mind later I suppose. Or Brett could retire. But to me, these are all non-issues. They're all knee-jerk reactions to a disappointing season. Knee-jerk reactions from sore losers. Brett said he felt he let his team and family down after the Miami loss (which even had the Jets won they wouldn't have qualified for the playoffs) and he feels he has unfinished business in NY. Plus, he DID have a bicep tear which could have affected his playing in the stretch. Should he have sat out then? Maybe.
And to guys like Jones, Rhodes, the coaches and other players on the Jets' team, you were on the field with Favre all season. You're part of the team and YOU should definitely share in the blame. And not just share in the wins.
