Passion = Truth? How Jeffrey James Francis Ircink Sees The World? I love when people are passionate about something. That surging of emotion is the one honest measure of what truth is. It's a truthful display of how a person really feels about something or someone at that particular moment. That passion IS truth.

Cali's a great place to visit...Solstice Parade compromised!

Rules of Solstice Parade: No motors on floats and no signs or signature of any sort. Oddly, nothing in print that says a float can't make a political or social statement; however, I'm very certain that floats of a political and social nature are not allowed. So why the Mexican man with Mexican children wearing masks and pulling a pack of cigarettes with a skull attached?

I emailed the Solstice committee but haven't heard back. If this sort of float is allowed, who's to say a float protesting the current administration in Washington, or a float in favor of the Arizona illegal alien bill, or a float protesting cruel and inhumane treatment of animals shouldn't be allowed??? See what I mean? The parades intent is not to lecture but to celebrate Summer Solstice.

I don't get this.

Separated at Birth? Joe Walsh and Crazy Solstice Air Guitar Dude.

The crazy air guitar dude is....um...oh, the one on the bottom, yes, at the post-Solstice parade party in Santa Barbara.

A few Solstice honeys.

Oops...how did Greg Nowak get in there? Sorry. Children - turn away.

Even though this picture of me and my Aunt Ev (dad's youngest sister) was taken the day before the parade, I wanted to include her in my Solstice Honey post 'cause she bitched at me last year as all the "honey's" were blondes. And after all, my Aunt Ev is the best Solstice Honey out there!

Check out my 2007 Solstice Babe post and the story behind the lame Solstice beer garden from last year. Newsflash! The beer garden is still fucked up. Same pathetic layout (the size of my right nut) AND - get this - they were charging a $5 cover to get in. BULLSHIT! I say to the beautiful city of Santa Barbara. We boycotted the garden this year - which is why I limited in my shots of Solstice Honeys this year.

Santa Barbara Solstice Parade!

This was my 4th or 5th Solstice. Was sorry that my brother, Jas, couldn't make it (fishing in Canada). Always a good time. Colorful floats. Colorful dancers. And the people of Santa Barbara embrace the spirit of the day that's fun to watch. Click on READ MORE! and enjoy the parade.

Greg getting into the Solstice spirit before the parade starts.

Don't know these folks but they looked the part so I shot them.

An errant Solstice bubble landed on my leg and remained there for a good hour.

Alien pod crossing.

Tom (far right) getting into it after the parade at Alameda Park. Quite primal, I must say. Old and young alike got into the action. Course, there wasn't 500 naked bicyclists like there were in the Seattle Solstice parade...but we had fun nevertheless.

Solstice 2009! Santa Barbara!

Headed back to SB tomorrow morning through the weekend for Solstice - Santa Barbara's answer to Mardi Gras. There's still some relation in town from last week's graduation so it'll be nice to sit back with a drink and partake in this annual tradition.

For a past look at previous Solstice's (Solsti?): 2008 Solstice, beer garden clusterfuck at 2008 Solstice, and Girls of 2007 Solstice. Happy Alban Heruin!

It's Druid...or Wicca. Something anti-Christian, I'm sure.

LOST "The Journey IS the Destination" series post: Notes from Chuck Nowak, M.D.

This past June, was it, I ran a very, very long series of posts entitled, "The Journey IS the Destination" (you can search them on the very bottom of the right panel under the series' name). Very exciting details of my brother's May trip from WI to CA and all our goings-ons (Santa Barbara, Solstice, Big Sur, Monterey, Sequoia National Forest, etcetera). Some awesome pictures. Here's one in the series I never posted:

We consider Chuck Nowak "family" (like his older siblings - Rick, Bev, Carol, Tom, Greg and Laura) - the youngest in my Uncle Bob's (non-blood) family. And he cares. So when Jason and I found a couple dozen notes tucked away in our convertible while partying at Chuck's sister Laura's home in Buellton, we chuckled. That's Chuck with his girlfriend, Heather, at the Solstice parade Saturday morning.

Maybe we should've taken them more seriously. Thanks, Chuck (and others). Your thoughts are appreciated. Here are the rest of Chuck's (and his accomplices) scribblings:

Isn't it about time - save yourself! Enjoy the rest of your life...Quit Now!
Girls don't want to kiss guys with smokey breath - Quit now before you lose your "P".
If we didn't love you, we couldn't ask you...Quit Now! Save your life!
I love you but the "smoothy" smell's gotta go.
Hey D-bag - your penis will shrink. Quit!!
I love you and hope you're around to take of me when I'm an old lady. So don't smoke and up your ante on a longer life - Love, Aunt Ev
Yuck!
Thanks. But I don't want your fucking kidney.
Smokes causes you to not get it up! Is this what you want?
Hack, Hack, hack. How's the mucus? I don't want to pay for your medicare. Love you.
Smoking increases your chances of finding a lover. Bad news it comes in the form of a fat, biker chick or a man. Truth.
From Gonads, to Nonads. It makes your dick shrivel.
These will cause your small nuts to shrivel even further to Neverland. But M.J. love Neverland.
Do you want to smell the fresh scent of women?
Just look up smokers' lungs on Google images.

The Journey IS the Destination #3: Wino-ries

Friday, June 20th. This is really #6 if you're following along with the series but it's #3 if we're gonna stay in chronological order. I can't make it #3 and then backdate it for yesterday 'cause then you'll miss it. I didn't take many artsy wine pictures this year - lazy...did that last year. So here's a few shots of the family imbibing.

Ok - here's one vista shot. Never been to a winery in the Santa Inez Valley? They all look like this. Pretty. We met up with the youngest foursome of our group who couldn't wait for us old farts to get our act in gear and hit several wineries, including Artiste, Robbler(?), Casa-something, Firestone and Kalyra.

I'm admiring the cask-work. Thanks, Ashly, for providing all pictures in this post. I would have bought you a gift but you probably bought it for yourself already. Or Brenda got it. Aunt Ev, below.

Nice shot. We look like the cast of "The Colby's" or "Falcon Crest". Look at my brother in the chair on the left - "There is no wine until I suck it all down..and THEN - there is no wine."

SMILE. At the count of three, everyone say. "CRACTION!" (inside joke). Let's see...who haven't you met? Aunt Ev in the front row (2nd from left, she's my dad's youngest sister and married to Uncle Bob Nowak, white shirt off her left shoulder) and next to her is Bev (2nd oldest daughter in the Nowak clan, married to our hunting/fishing partner, Gary Schmidt - who's parents were close to my Grandma and Grandpa Ircink). I think you met Greg Nowak, another Nowak brother - in the middle, back.

See all those wine glasses? You get to keep them. So everyone who didn't need glasses gave them to Scotty and Ash as they're engaged and can use wine glasses. The real mystery is what happened to all those wine glasses...which I'll save for a post of its own.

Me, Scotty, Jason and Joe.

Joe & Brenda and me - at Tom Nowak's, another brother in the Nowak Clan.

The Journey IS the Destination #5: Beer Garden at Solstice

Saturday, June 21. Definition of "clusterfuck". Solstice beer garden. Look for yourself.

It was the same way last year. You've got an entire park at your disposal and you block off a gonad-sized section for your beer tent. Granted, there are a number of booths and a stage area in the park but believe me, there's PLENTY of room to expand the beer tent area so you're not elbow-to-elbow with thirsty, drunken, sweaty people (unless they're thirsty, drunken, sweaty women). The lines for beer are ridiculous - and if you grabbed two beers at a time the other one was lukewarm by the time you got to it because it was hotter than shit out.

I'm sure Solstice officials, the City of Santa Barbara and the police department function under the assumption that a smaller beer tent area means a smaller beer drinking crowd and, therefore, minimum crowd control when it comes to out-of-hand Solstice revelers. That's fine - if you then limited the number of people you allowed into the tent area like you would a nightclub.

That's it. I've vented. Get it right, SB.

The Journey IS the Destination #4: Santa Barbara's Solstice!

Saturday, June 20th. Come to the Mardi Gras parade and festivities that is Solstice!, marking the first days of summer. This was our 2nd year - Jas and I - and is always quite the sight. Just ask Aunt Ev. Course, I had to get in a plug for the blog...come join us for the festivities and see the three-legged dog!

(Wait! There's more to see...)

The Brothers Ircink.

My Uncle Bob and Amara - his brother's girlfriend's daughter

We left with about 15 minutes remaining in the parade - some people were antsy to get to the beer garden (or shop some more) - and I missed this woman, wearing nothing but pasties, some floss and shoes.

A reveler in the parade.

The floats are quite unique. No motors allowed - everything powered by the sun or by foot.

Scott and Chuck Nowak. Chuck is the youngest of the Nowak clan (8 all told). My Uncle Bob (married to my dad's youngest sister, Evelyn) is the oldest. Scott is the oldest of Bev - a Nowak herself. We hunt and fish with Bev's husband, Gary. Should I slow down?

Brenda and Ashley. Brenda is my cousin Joe's lady (Joe is the middle child of Bob and Ev) and Ashley is engaged to Scott. These two like to shop - and can never sit still. I DO enjoy their company though.

There's Cousin Joe and my brother. We got impatient for the parade to start so we walked a block and grabbed some libations.

Mark, Laura and Melissa Aldecoa. They live in Buellton - Laura is the youngest of the Nowak sisters. That's Natalie on the pavement - the youngest of my Uncle Bob's kids. Anyone see Aunt Ev?

These statues are grouped in an area of downtown Santa Barbara - window washers and other figures at play and work. Here Dr. Franklin and I have a little chat about the 2nd Amendment and the right to bear arms. He concurred - as did the United States Supreme Court, 5-4.

For a hunter, Jas is quite the animal lover. Until dove season comes around. KERPLOWIE!!

Ash and Scott. Young love. We'll come back to them in 20 years and check in on things.

Cousin Mike - child number 4 in Bob/Ev Nowak clan. He just graduated from high school and thinks he's big shit. He also plays guitar and drums. You know I sing - THAT's an instrument, too.

Mike showing off for the crowd. He's actually pretty good and self-taught.

A group of us at Haskell's Beach.

Waiting for the big wave.

One-legged dog. He hopped around pretty good - would never have known he was a leg shy.

Girls in jacuzzi. Good place to end, huh?
