Passion = Truth? How Jeffrey James Francis Ircink Sees The World? I love when people are passionate about something. That surging of emotion is the one honest measure of what truth is. It's a truthful display of how a person really feels about something or someone at that particular moment. That passion IS truth.

GB Coach MM goes "BH" (that's "boo hoo"). Teehee.

Be careful what you say to Green Bay Packer's (4-4 and having a shitty season now that the train left and Favre wasn't on it) Head Coach Mike McCarthy. You'll find yourself on the dole.

(Actually, by the tone of the article - see link - I think the entire Packer organization is going "boo hoo".)

But I thought Aaron Rodgers WASN'T the problem??

At least that's what my cousin Scott told me. That's what Packer fans and the Wisconsin media have been telling me. It was the defense and special teams. NOT Rodgers.

In Milwaukee Journal Sentinel writer Rob Reischel's article, McCarthy facing a precarious future - Righting the ship will be his focus, Reischel states with no uncertainty, "Aaron Rodgers, the first-year starter at quarterback, was nowhere near Brett Favre's level when it came to late-game heroics".

Precarious, to say the least.

Colin Cowherd of ESPN is dead WRONG. And I want a retraction.

Colin Cowherd of ESPN Radio hosts "The Herd", which I get on KSPN-710 in Los Angeles weekday mornings. He's hated or loved - nothing in between. OK, I like him. He does come across pompous-ish. But he made one comment this morning that I vehemently disagree with - and he's wrong.

And I want a public retraction.

He called New York QB Brett Favre of the New York Jets a "coach killer". That was it. Nothing to back up the statement. And he made it sound as if a precedent had been set with past Favre coaches. All this on the heels of the Jets firing of Head Coach Eric Mangini today and - well, Cowherd spouted his mouth off and if he had done his research (he always states how he does his homework) he would have never made the comment in the first place. He went on to say - without actually saying it - that Favre is responsible for the Jets starting out 8-3, then dropping to 9-7; thus, a "coach killer".

Favre played under 4 coaches at Green Bay:

1. Mike Holmgren, who left GB because he wanted to become a coach/GM at Seattle. No coach killing there. He nurtured Favre from the beginning and they won a SB together. Shoulda been at least 2 more.

2. Ray Rhodes came on aboard and lasted one season. Rhodes killed his own career.

3. Mike Sherman coached from 2000-05. He had an overall winning record but in the end, couldn't finish the job. Believe me as a Packer fan all my life (until I boycotted them this year in favor of Favre and the Jets), you poll GB fans and 99% will tell you Sherman killed his own career.

4. Mike McCarthy - 2006-present; one of the three, now famous, 3 Wise Monkeys of the GB management team who thought it best for the team to "ride the train outta town" without Brett Favre this past season. The Packers, who were 13-3 the previous year and one win from the SB, fell to a 6-10 record this past season under the leadership of their new QB, Aaron Rodgers...and the 3 Wise Monkeys.

So you see, Mr. Herd, Brett Favre is NOT a "coach killer" as you alluded to on your show this morning. If anything, he's been an asset to coaches throughout his career, as well as their own careers. How can you make such an irresponsible, blanket statement like that without checking your facts? Notwithstanding Mangini's firing this morning (and, as I've said, even when the Jets were 8-3 I constantly questioned much of Mangini's coaching moves/strategies), I want a retraction and I want it done on your show for the nation to hear.

I was right. Ted Thompson does suck Rudolph's left hind teat.

On December 7th, Mike Vandermause of the Green Bay Gazette/Packernews.com wrote a commentary on how he was wrong all season - that the Green Bay Packers do, in fact, suck.

"For three months, the Green Bay Packers have fooled us into believing they were a respectable football team and legitimate playoff contender...I was wrong, and I won’t be the only one spending the off-season trying to figure out why. " You can read the article here.

Why? 'Cause they (Packer management) were part of one of the biggest PR debacles in the history of sports, besides making the wrong decision...a decision based on pride, control and ego. I've written enough on the subject to fill the Library of Congress so I'll let you research the topic on this blog on your own time. I'm proud of Mike for admitting he was wrong - even though I think he and others like him are flip-flopping bitches. Had he and those of like mind listened to my brother and I and those like us before the start of the season when we were calling for the 3 Wise Monkey's (GM Ted Thompson, Coach Mike McCarthy and President Mark "Howdy Doody" Murphy - his last name slipped my mind for a minute) heads on a platter after they traded Hall of Fame-to-be QB Brett Favre to the New York Jets, perhaps public opinion might have swayed the Packers management to do likewise.

Coach Mike "Kika" McCarthy, GM Ted "Iwa" Thompson Iwazaru and President Mark "Howdy Doody/Miz" Murphy at today's press conference addressing Brett Favre's trade to the New York Jets. It was Murphy in his "infinite wisdom" (and with foot up ass) who said of Thompson, at this press conference, "I think Ted Thompson did a masterful job of handling THIS situation". More like a "masterbater" job, you red-headed, Howdy Doody, dumb fuck!.

Then again, probably not. But they jumped on the "Get rid of Favre bandwagon" like so many others simply to be done with the situation and now the Packers are sitting at a 5-8 record and will not go to the playoffs - one year after Favre helped lead the team to a 13-3 record and one game away from the Super Bowl.

Me? I stuck to my guns from Day One, as did my brother, and boycotted the Packers after 44 years in order to support Brett and the Jets, who are sitting at 8-5...with their playoff hopes in their own hands. Not sure what'll happen. They'll win the AFC East if they sweep their last 3 games. If they falter - it's anyone's game. But as the Jets were 4-12 last season, it's a vast improvement.

Compare the two pictures. See the resemblence?

Now on December 5th, just two days prior to Vander"mouse's" commentary above, he wrote this pathetic article, "Thompson's down, but insists Packers aren't out". You can read that here.

The gist of this diatribe was that General Manager Ted Thompson is disappointed in the Green Bay Packers’ 5-7 record but isn’t reaching for the panic button. "Speaking of second-guessing, disgruntled fans as well as some media pundits continue to criticize Thompson for trading Brett Favre. How does Thompson respond?" 'I don’t,' he said. 'I think I’ll let the fans say what they want to say and the pundits say what they want to say. I think that’s for you guys to decide. It’s not my deal.'

Thompson/McCarthy/Murphy = douches. Vandermouse = pud, not pundit. Then on December 9th, Vandermouse goes further to stain the Ted Thompson reputation by writing this article, "Blame bad defense on Thompson, not Sanders". You can read this one here.

My point? Vandermouse needs to stop writing and just shut it. All these douche bags running around Green Bay should've listened to the Ircink brothers and those who share our opinion - the Packers should've never traded Favre. Brett's #1 asset is that he makes a team legit by just stepping onto the field. GB QB Aaron Rogers doesn't have that cache yet. To place at risk a 13-3 season because you don't like Brett and because "the train has left the building" is bullshit. Packer management can go to hell.

I think there's an Amtrak train leaving the Green Bay bus stop at 5:15 a.m Monday morning. Be on it, you dumb bastards.

ESPN readers say Jets got better end of Favre trade.

ESPN is debating on number of "hot" topics - current MVP, best running back, best team, worst team and, who got the better end of the Brett Favre trade: Jets or Packers?

As of 11:06 a.m this morning PST, 30,101 voters chimed in and 75% say the Jets got the best of the deal, while 25% say the Pack got the best of the deal.

Heeehawww!! So sorry, 3 Wise Monkeys (Pres. Mike Murphy, Coach Mike McCarthy and GM Ted Thompson). You know where I stand, regardless of how either team's season ends up. The Packers can lick my lingum. I remain a loyal boycotter of Green Bay and will NOT cross the scab picket line. GO JETS IN 2008! GO FAVRE IN 2008!

So sayeth #2 Wise Monkey - Packer Coach McCarthy.

In paraphrasing Coach McCarthy during the heat of the Brett Favre PR debacle, "We've moved on. We've designed our offense around the strengths of Aaron Rodgers."

"kenwinter" posted on Packernews.com: 'Did anyone read the "Real Football" article on Brett? After describing how the Jets coaching staff has literally revamped their offensive scheme to take advantage of Brett's skills and experience, the author concluded by saying..."The quarterback has already done his part to change the culture. There is a chemical reaction going on here that has removed all limitations on this team for the first time in a long time. The Jets feel like they can win every week. Will they? No. But they will win enough...Intangibles, intangibles, intangibles...'

And from "doughsellsz": 'What's it been now, two months & NYJ have "completely revamped" their offense to accommodate the NAME? Didn't MM say that's why the NAME couldn't come back to GB? Somehow NYJ has been able to adjust.'

I couldn't agree more.

Green Bay Packer Coach McCarthy said what????

From a comment on PackerPalace.com:

"...I won't go too far into the whole Number 4 debacle and some of the crappy things he said but he sat there and told us that he has a whole different plan for AA Rod and that all that planning would be shot if Favre came back. Then I hear him just a week or so ago saying that the plan and plays are no different between Favre and Rodgers..."

So what is it? Same or different? Talk about Favre not being able to make up his mind about retiring.

Jets, Favre = 1st Win of Season; Send Dolphins to the Fishes / Jets 1-0. Packers 1-0.

6 minutes into the 1st quarter, Brett Favre pulls off a fantastic fake handoff and unleashes hell on the Dolphin defense - a 56 yard TD pass to Jerricho Cotchery.

Brett's first regular season start as a Jet. Missed the game live as I was in Chicago for the weekend but I'll watch the tape later. Saw highlights - and received text messages from my brother on the Brett's progress. Gotta tell you - I had butterflies. But we won. 254 consecutive starts for Favre. Every stat he accumulated today added to every major QB record he owns - consecutive starts, games won, passing yards, TDs, etc. Except the INT record - 'cause he didn't have any. Nice game, Brett. And nice game JETS! (As you'll notice, I'm keeping a running score of the Packers' season next to the Jets' season...to hopefully stick it to Packer GM Thompson and the rest of the 3 Wise Monkeys (Pres. Murphy and Coach McCarthy).

Next Week: Patriots (1-0) at Jets (1-0)

Favre in the clutches of a Miami defender, yet he gets a 22-yard TD off to - someone...I don't know all the players yet on the team. Hey - I've only been following the Packers for 43 years and Brett with the Packers for 16. It's not easy switching your allegiances for a team, even when they are run by 3 Wise Monkeys.

The consumate celebrator.

And the consumate TD "#1" in the air.

For shits and giggles, here are Favre's stats for his first game as a Packer back in 1992, compared to his first game as a Jet in 2008.

Just like a little boy at Christmas, I raced home from work because I knew this package was waiting for me - the new Brett Favre "4" New York Jets hat. One for me and one for my brother, Jas.

I betcha the 3 Wise Monkeys who head up the Green Bay Packers' management team (Thompson, McCarthy and Murphy) don't have one of these. Look at it and weep, you three lousy, lame-ass monkeys.

Mister Rogers meets the Green Bay Packers and the Three Wise Monkeys.

I was perusing Packernews.com for Favre-related stories and found this response under an article on some recent harassment QB Aaron Rogers has been receiving while on the practice field. I laughed out loud.

COOLYOURJETS wrote:
"It's a beautiful day in the neighborhood....Hi boys and girls. My name is Mister Rogers. Let me take off my sweater and put on my Packers jersey. It has the number 12 on it. Can you say "TWELVE" boys and girls? Now let's go to the land of make believe and visit with Choo Choo McCarthy. He wants everyone to get on board his choo choo if they have the right mind set. Now boys and girls... do you have the right mind set? After that boys and girls... we can all go visit Mr. Barn Owl. He has fluffy white hair and scary dark eyes that never blink. Please won't you be my neighbor?"

8/9/2008 12:04:40 AM

"Mr. Barn Owl" is Packer GM Ted Thompson (middle), flanked by the two other monkeys, Coach Mike "I'm Always Right" McCarthy on the left and President Mark "Howdy Doody" Murphy on the right. I'm sort of torn on the issue of at what point the various Packer websites/media - including Packernews.com - should give the the latest Brett Favre news updates a rest...now that he's not a Packer anymore. I mean, Brett will always be a Green Bay Packer - he'll retire (when he actually does) a Packer. But part of me feels, 'hey...Brett's gone - thanks to the "Three Wise Monkeys" - and the Packer media rightfully should lose him as their darling media boy he's been for 16 years'.

We're all casualites of the "masterful" way (Murphy's words) in which Ted Thompson handled this situation. Why not the media? After all, it's the media that first brought up the question of retirement five years ago or so in Packers' new conferences. "Brett, are you coming back next year?" "Brett, have you thought about retiring?" How 'bout one more year, Brett?" The local media has to suffer as well. Can't have your cake and eat it too - fucking bastards. The Three Wise Monkeys AND the media. Am I wrong?

Coach McCarthy says Favre not in the right "mindset" to play for Green Bay.

So - Favre left Green Bay. And the talk this morning is he may be headed to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. GB Coach Mike McCarthy held a press conference yesterday and basically the press corps witnessed what a talking asshole looks like.

My thoughts.

I think Mike McCarthy watched the Paul Newman flick "Cool Hand Luke" one too many times as his constant reference to Favre's "mindset" not being right for Green Bay was a theme throughout his blatherings. Forget about the Packer management "mindset" of standing firm in their decision that Aaron Rogers is the future of this team and the starting QB once Brett decided to opt out of retirement.

1) How convenient to suddenly say that he (McCarthy) talked to Brett about an open QB competition, then commented that Brett doesn't have the right mindset to play in Green Bay, thus offering Brett the chance to win the starting QB job - and taking it away it one fell swoop, while laying that decision at Brett's feet. Bravo, Mike. Did former press secretary Ari Fleischer teach you that "spin", Coach?

2) Maybe Favre does harbor resentment toward the Packers, which would account for burned bridges that could never be crossed. Can anyone blame him? When Favre came out of retirement, the Packers did everything they could to keep him retired, saying we'll trade you and not release you. Ted Thompson stated that Brett would be the back up QB and that there would be NO competition for the position. Then they put an exclamation mark on all that by even offered him a $20-25 million bribe to stay retired. And when Brett was put back on the roster, he was NOT allowed to go onto the field during the inter-squad scrimmage game at Family Night and he was NOT allowed in the locker room. So is there really a question that he wasn't wanted there? Wouldn't anyone in Brett's position have hurt feelings after giving 16 years to the Packer organization? For McCarthy to say Brett's "mindset" isn't right to play in Green Bay under these circumstances is the equivalent of beating the shit out of a dog, putting your hand out to the dog expecting it to come to you, but saying, "oh, you won't come to me...then you're not obeying your master and now I'll have to give you up for adoption".

3) And what about the question asked of McCarthy during his press conference yesterday, "Why isn't Brett the QB of this team for 2008?". McCarthy's response, "That's an excellent question. I think you need to ask Brett," - as if suddenly now thrusting all need for an explanation unto Brett. And then when asked, "why is it that you've been saying Aaron Rogers is your man all this time..." and McCarthy said, "I don't agree with your question." McCarthy said he stated Rogers was the starting QB on their 80-man roster and that Favre wasn't on the roster so he wasn't going to discuss hypothetical situation.

That's a lie. What the Packer organization stated all along - while Brett was retired and after he decided to come back - was that (as I stated above in #2) the team moved forward; Rogers was the starting QB; Brett could be a back up, and that there would be no competition for the QB position. McCarthy is simply splitting hairs and spinning the Packers' stance on Roger's so they don't look like the dumbfucks that they look like now. Get that one from Ari as well?

Had the Packers - from the very start - just accepted that Brett wanted back and made him the starting QB, this entire PR nightmare would have been avoided. Brett would be back on the team. No harsh words or planted stories or animosities would have been exchanged that would have affected the mindsets of anyone, and the Packers' world - and Packer fans around the world - would have been in the right place.

Instead, Brett might now play ball in a different uniform, the Packers have a talented team with a starting QB who has never started an NFL game and has been somewhat injury prone, with two rookie back ups who also have never started a game. Packer Nation is divided - including my own family and friends. And I am boycotting the Packers' 2008 season. Thank you. Ted Thompson, Mike McCarthy and Mark Murphy for creating a clusterfuck with your extraordinary management skills that have set this franchise back at least 16 years.

Brett's headed to the Hall of Fame. I look forward to the day when the three of you are inducted into Canton's Hall of Shame.

Packer Pres/CEO "Howdy Doody Murphy" Skipped Down to Mississippi.

Well what do marionettes do? Hop? Jump? Marionette?

So, you know where our Green Bay Packers President/CEO Mark Murphy is today? The team sent him last night on a private plane to visit Brett Favre in Mississippi in an attempt to persuade the quarterback to stay home rather than report to training camp this week.

A source told the Press-Gazette that Murphy will this morning with Favre and his agent, Bus Cook, at Cook’s law office in Hattiesburg, Miss. “They’re asking him not to come up there,” the source said. “They don’t want him up there.”

Lying, two-face motherfuckers. I'm not making this shit up. Back up...upon hearing the news that Brett Favre had faxed his reinstatement letter to the NFL yesterday, Packers head coach Mike McCarthy told ESPN that "He will be welcomed back into our locker room."

McCarthy repeated that comment today regarding Murphy's trip to Mississippi - while Murphy is (as we speak) begging Favre not to show up to training camp! As I believe McCarthy is only Thompson's mouthpiece in this whole ordeal, isn't it safe to assume McCarthy was speaking for Thompson and the Packer front office??? So, something like six hours after Favre faxes his reinstatement letter in to the league office, the Packers' president is on a plane for Mississippi to try and dissuade future Hall of Famer Brett Favre - who led the Pack to a 13-3 regular season record last season while smashing every last QB record there is - from showing up to training camp because the Packer higher ups took Brett at his word that he retired and have moved on with a QB who has never started a regular season game and only played in 3 games last season (correct me if I'm off on my number of games or length Rogers played in each game) - getting hurt in 2 of them??? NOW WHO'S WAFFLING???

Hey Brett - tell Mark "Clown Shoes (that's right, Scotty), Thompson's marionette/Howdy Doody/whipping boy" Murphy to kiss your Mississippi ass!

Mike McCarthy said...

I believe GM Ted Thompson's the real prick in this whole Favre mess so I'd really rather not pick on Green Bay Packer Coach Mike McCarthy. I like him.

But McCarthy did say this in the New York Times, March 5, 2008 issue, quote, "He (Favre) was clearly wanted back. How could you not want Brett Favre's career to continue?"

Well - Brett wants to come back, Mike. How could you not want his career to continue?

"How FAIR would it be to pull the rug out from under Rogers???"

You're kidding me, right?

According to Peter King of Sports Illustrated, Packer Coach Mike McCarthy said this to Favre in the last two weeks. FAIR????? You put the best team you can out on that football field. FAIR???? What is this - musical chairs? That's the most asinine excuse if I've heard from someone in management to not start Favre (if McCarthy said that and I don't think he meant it even if he did; I think McCarthy is feeling pressure to back Packer brASS, GM Ted Thompson.)

You know what's not fair? Intentionally putting together a sub-par team out of spite's sake. That amounts to cheating your staff, your team, your fans, your shareholders, the City of Green Bay, the State of Wisconsin and the NFL. That constitutes "throwing a game" which should be investigated by the commission and dealt with harshly.

Jeff Ircink to Boycott Packers if Favre Released from Contract.

(WARNING. This post contains obscenities. No children should read this. I apologize but this is no laughing matter and I can't understand why this is all a big topic of debate now.)

If you know me you know I bleed green and yellow...and Brett Favre. Just look at the blog coverage I gave the Pack last year. But the shit is gonna hit the fan soon if certain stuff goes down. Now God dammit I'm getting sick of hearing about the possibility of Brett coming back to the NFL. Brett's denied it and the Packers are not commenting. This story needs to stay buried until SOMEONE makes SOMETHING public. My M.O. is to post a picture of Brett along with a Packer story but I will not associate Brett with this asinine, tabloid journalism (not mine, the media), so I'll put up a picture of our GM Ted Thompson as ultimately it'll be his decision as to whether he keeps Favre or cuts him loose SHOULD Brett want to come back to the team.

But before anything - IF anything is made public - I wanted to go on the record with my stance on this matter.

Based on talk today by Peter King of Sports Illustrated, who said he's positive that Favre's agent will file papers in the next 10 days asking the Packers to take Brett of the retired/reserved list and move him to ACTIVE, let me say this: PACKERS...get your heads outta your asses and take Brett back. That simple. Here's why:

1) I'm sick of this talk that the Packers have moved on and made personnel changes and drafted players based on Favre retiring. Bullshit. This is almost the dumbest thing I've ever heard of in my entire life. What about the 16 years while Brett was on the team when management picked shitty guys in the draft? You can't have it both ways Packers. And if it's an ego thing with Thompson, then Thompson can double-fuck himself. Aaron Rogers is his boy - we know that. First draft pick Thompson made. But how can one think that grown, educated NFL personnel are sitting around a table saying, "Oh shit, Brett...don't do this to us. Such a big deal was made over your retirement (which is usually the case when someone retires) and now we're back at a crossroads and, well...funny but we're actually considering not taking you back. Because of all the work we went through to move on after you...". Oh just shut up.

2) We've moved on with Aaron Rogers and you said you retired. We want to protect your legacy. Fuck that and the next person who says that I'm gonna shoot (along with the next person who says they're sick of Brett manipulating the media and the team with his wishy-washy, will-I-or-won't-I-retire attitude). Brett's the only one who has to worry about his legacy. You'll tarnish the Packers' legacy if you cut him or trade him to another team, you assholes. And what - is this a schoolyard game of sorts, "My hands on the tree. The tree's school. I'm safe here. That's the rule!" Because Brett retired he can't unretire? Rogers has been sitting the bench of four years now (or 5) - he can't sit another year? If he doesn't like it, he can ask to be traded. The Packers should never have signed a high draft pick to begin with at that time - my brother and I both said it. And if the Pack are so damned confident the Rogers is the heir apparent (and I'm not saying he's not), why'd the Packers draft TWO QBs this year? You wanna win a Super Bowl this season or is winning the Super Bowl in your "5-year, long-term plan" - another dumbass way of thinking. "Building for the future". Right. You can bet your sweet ass that if Rogers gets injured in training camp or preseason and it were known Favre wanted to still play that Thompson and McCarthy would be on the phone in a second asking Brett if he wanted to come back. Again - you can't have it both ways, Packers.

3) 14-4 last year and a hair from the Super Bowl. What's the NFL - ultimately - about? Winning the Super Bowl. Who do you want as your QB = Favre or Rogers? A six-year-old can figure that one out (well, most six-year-olds). Rogers had one good game against Dallas last year AND he got hurt twice in two other games. Rogers is untested. Favre's a veteran and a future Hall of Famer who had one of his best seasons last year and may have received his 4th MVP had it not been for Tom Brady's season. And he's Favre. Enough said. The offense has begun to get used to Rogers now in the off-season workouts - big deal. It was mini camp and the entire offense worked under Favre last season so it's not like there's a learning curve involved with Favre coming back.

4) The media can all die. The media is racking this story over the coals for everything it's worth because it has nothing else to report on. The media's been racking this story over the coals for five years when THEY first intimated with Favre the subject of retiring. And the media is reporting on NOTHING but he said-she said tidbits of rumor this and rumor that and until the Packers release a statement or Favre has a press conference to make any of this valid, the media needs to just die.

5) It's Favre's decision if he wants to play again. Who are any of us to say, "well...you retired, so...so you have to stay retired". Why are people even sticking their two cents in regarding whether he should stay retired or not? Listen you cocksuckers, my father retired from GM then went back to work 4 hours a morning for 3-4 days (still at it). Are you seriously going to tell my father to stay retired as well?! Why don't you retire? Retire your mouths and SHUT THE FUCK UP!

I'm not gonna worry about what Chris Mortenson from ESPN or Peter King from SI or Brett's mom or Brett's brother said or what was said in the past or what some people thought was insinuated in the past, blah, blah, fucking blah. The bloodsucking media will do that for us. If Brett decides to come back and the Packers release him or trade him and I see Brett in another uniform, I am DONE. I will not watch any Packer games this season. Rest assured. And if Thompson does that he can go fuck himself. Because now HE tarnished the Packers' image and he'll have to live with that IF he makes it out of Green Bay alive.

Will he or won't he? Favre to return to Packers?

Personally - I think he's coming back.

"Hopefully we’re close," said Packers coach Mike McCarthy said. "We had a very good discussion last week. I know Ted (Thompson) talked to him in the last couple days. I should talk to him here in the next day or two. My whole thing with Brett is make a decision that you can commit 100% to. That’s what you have to do. For him, the season’s still fresh. He’s worn out from the season. He’s talking about it. He’ll do the right thing."

McCarthy was asked what the holdup is with Favre's decision. Favre finished second in the MVP voting and had indicated late in the season he'd have a decision sooner than a year ago. Last year, Favre announced he was coming back on Feb. 2. "You go through all the things that people think, that hey, he should play, he has a lot left, and that really has nothing to do with it," McCarthy said. "It’s not the fact that he knows he still can play. He had a great time this year. "

"It’s just the fact that he’s played a lot of football, and he’s had to fully commit himself and his family year in and year out. When you do get older, you have more responsibility, and he just wants to make sure he’ll be able to commit himself 100 percent. Because if he doesn’t think he’s 100 percent in, he thinks it might be his time to walk away."

(Continued)

McCarthy said he's taking some good-natured ribbing from others across the NFL who would love Favre to pack it up. "Oh yeah," McCarthy said. "Players and coaches. `Tell that old guy to retire.' I hear that all the time." Speaking of the other NFL teams, there are at least a few of the Packers' rivals and conference opponents are hoping he opts to walk away. "I doubt that's going to happen (just) from watching Brett play," said Minnesota coach Brad Childress, whose Vikings were 0-2 against the Packers in 2007, as Favre completed 65 of 91 passes for 695 yards, five touchdowns and no interceptions (111.7 rating) in the two games. "Am I holding out any hopes that he quits? I probably (have more) hope that he falls off his lawnmower." Detroit Lions coach Rod Marinelli said, "Brett Favre is a heck of a football player. Would it help us for him to be somewhere else? Sure. But I just assume he's going to play forever."

"For sure, I want him to retire," said St. Louis coach Scott Linehan, whose Rams handled Favre (19-for-30, 225 yards, two TDs and two INTs) but still lost 33-14 on Dec. 16. "But I would be really surprised (if he does). You can just see, he's been reborn. He just defies everything. He just gets better with age. "As long as you can protect him, and they were able to get that running game going, (so) he didn't have to chuck it every time. He's unbelievable."

Linehan was among the coaches surprised and impressed by how well Favre played while turning 38 during the season. Favre finished the regular season having completed a career-best 66.5 percent of his regular-season passes for 4,155 yards, 28 touchdowns and 15 interceptions for a 95.7 passer rating, his best since 1995.

For his part, McCarthy said the only way Favre's indecision affects the Packers is if he doesn't decide by the start of free agency at 11 p.m. next Thursday. In that case, the Packers wouldn't know if they needed to sign a veteran backup for Aaron Rodgers if Favre did quit, or if his $12 million base salary for 2008 will be on the books. "I wouldn't play any differently with Brett or without Brett. Conceptually, we'll still attack it the same way," McCarthy said. "It doesn't change anything from a scheme (or) preparation standpoint." Still, despite some coaches' hopes, not all of Favre's would-be opponents would like to see him hang 'em up. Former Packers and current Seattle coach Mike Holmgren, whose team was knocked out of the playoffs for the second time in five years in an NFC divisional playoff game Jan. 12, will coach his final season with the Seahawks in 2008, and he hopes Favre is back for one more year, too. "You know what? I love seeing him. He plays great against me, and that's a tough thing, but I want him to play as long as he wants to play," said Holmgren, Favre's coach from 1992 through '98. "But I really have nothing to do with that. If he's there, I'll do what I always do — give him a hug, and (tell him) it's good to see him. If he's not there, then we play (against) whoever's playing."

In other Favre news, the Mississippi State Legislature honored Brett Favre for breaking several passing records this year. Favre, the former University of Southern Mississippi star from Kiln, was honored with a resolution last week.

Favre, McCarthy Nominated for FedEx Air Player of the Year/Motorola Coach of the Year

Favre led the Packers to a 13-3 record and the NFC North title. Favre completed 66.5 percent of his passes (his highest ever) for 4,155 yards and threw 28 touchdown passes. Favre set five career NFL records, including most wins by a quarterback (160 - beating Elway), most touchdown passes (442 - beating Marino), most passing yards (61,655 - beating Marino) and completions (5,377 - beating Marino) and surpassing George Blanda for most INTs. Favre now has ALL the major QB records for the NFL. There are no more.

His 82-yard touchdown pass to Greg Jennings against Denver was the second-longest overtime touchdown in NFL history. Favre was nominated for six FedEx Express NFL Player of the Week awards in 2007, winning five times - two other QBs tied for three wins.

Mike McCarthy took a Green Bay team that finished 8-8 in 2006 to a 13-3 record, securing the No. 2 seed in the NFC and tying the Packers franchise record for wins in a season. McCarthy, who calls the plays on offense, watched QB Brett Favre have a resurgent season and an offense that came in second in total yards per game (370.7), total passing yards (270.9), and fourth in total points scored (450). To protect Favre, McCarthy employed the league’s only offensive line that used five of their own draft choices as starters. On defense, the Packers were tied for sixth in points allowed (291) and interceptions (19). Green Bay is young and talented on defense, with only two starters in their 30s. On special teams, the Packers relied on the foot of rookie kicker Mason Crosby, who had three field goals of at least 50 yards. McCarthy was nominated for two Motorola NFL Coach of the Week awards, winning twice - as have the other three nominated coaches.

My opinion on this is that based on the amount of times Brett won this award throughout the season, he should win hands down and it would be an outrage if he didn't. McCarthy - he should win purely because nothing was expected of the Packers this season. Though Belicheat won the AP Coach of the Year this season, McCarthy was chosen NFL Alumni Coach of the Year - voted on by former NFL players.
