Passion = Truth? How Jeffrey James Francis Ircink Sees The World? I love when people are passionate about something. That surging of emotion is the one honest measure of what truth is. It's a truthful display of how a person really feels about something or someone at that particular moment. That passion IS truth.

Happy Birthday, Seymour!

You know character actor Seymour Cassel. Come on...Faces (Oscar nominee), Coogan's Bluff, Minnie and Moskowitz, The Killing of a Chinese Bookie, Tin Men, Dick Tracy, Honeymoon in Vegas, Indecent Proposal, Rushmoor, 61*, The Royal Tenenbaums, The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou, Flight of The Conchords - and, our short film, Pass the Salt, Please.

78 years young today. Watch this clip from PTSP at the Wisconsin Film Festival in 2012. Seymour was a hoot. That pic above? Seymour recounting (to me) his experiences working with friend, John Cassavettes.

Where'd ya go, Pop Culture Chick #11? Deborah Raffin.

Former Revlon model and one-time unoffical Hollywood ambassador to China, Deborah Raffin first hit her stride in the made-for-TV movie, Once Is Not Enough (1975). I fell in love with her when she played the beautiful Chris Farris in the made-for-TV mini-series, The Last Convertible (1979), still one of my favorite television films of all-time.

Raffin was next in line for the role of Sandy in Grease after Susan Dey turned it down, As fate would have it, producer Allan Carr bumped into Olivia Newton-John at a dinner party and...well, you know the rest.

Raffin was seen on 7th Heaven for a couple years and most recently on The Secret Life of the American Teenager. Not sure what she's up to these days and can't find any up-to-date information.

Here's Deborah in a scene from Once Is Not Enough.

Separated at Birth! Liv Tyler & Jessica Paré.

You know Liv Tyler (top) - actress and daughter of Aerosmith's Steven Tyler. Paré is currently starring on Mad Men and had a delightfully wonderful hot tub scene in Hot Tub Time Machine (didn't see the movie but saw the scene - Google it).

Women Celebs I Love #11 - Lena Headey

Geezus - it's been forever since I've done one of these posts. I first remember seeing Headey in Zack Snyder's 300 (2007). She brought strength and sexy to the role of Queen Gorgo...a queen I would gladly allow to rule over me (ha!). She's also starred in the TV show, Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, as well as The Brothers Grimm and the cable series, Game of Thrones. Quite a long resume actually.

And I love her British accent. And she's sexy (did I say that already?). Yah. Here's Lena in an interview for 300.

Mad Woman.

“The guy I was dating when I first got to L.A. was not supportive of my acting,” she says. “He was like, I don’t think you’re going to be good at this. So—fuck you! He only has nice things to say now—if anything, I should thank him. Because the minute you tell me I can’t do something, that’s when I’m most motivated.” That guy was Ashton Kutcher.

Mike Farrell's, "Of Mule and Man". Read it.

"Not since Steinbeck's Travels with Charley in Search of America has there been a more beautifully written and compelling journey into the heartland of America. Mike Farrell celebrates his beloved country with great honesty and sincerity, with humility and grace. A beautiful and courageous book."
- Ron Kovic, author of Born on the Fourth of July

Mike Farrell - actor, writer, director, producer and social activist - pens a poignant journey of his travels across the United States in his rented Prius, "Mule", while promoting his autobiography, Just Call Me Mike: A Journey to Actor and Activist. I thought the most appropriate manner in which I could discuss this book is to just reprint the email I sent Mike:

Mike,

Received Of Mule and Man on Wednesday. Finished Saturday morning. Should’ve finished it sooner, but with the impending move back to WI I was interrupted. Otherwise, couldn’t put it down. Your penchant for storytelling is remarkable – second nature. You’re writing is perfect. Interestingly, those who’ve read my plays overwhelmingly say that my style of writing dialogue is…well, it sounds natural. Like, this is how people talk. And isn’t that how a play should read - as if it's real-life (at least, those that do, in fact, reflect real-life)?

Obviously, I wasn’t aware Shelley broke her hip. Ouch! I trust the healing process is going well. My thoughts are with her. Interesting to think how the book might have read with her along for the trip. And your son got married! Very nice…congratulations to him and his bride.

Random thoughts. That paragraph about “who needs the radio” and talking to yourself? Hilarious. Do it all the time. I’ve always said ‘if I don’t listen to myself talk, why should I expect others to?’ Loved the cover design of the book. Loved “riding” along with you throughout your incredible cross-country journey (what…no stops in WI???). After having read your bio and now this book, I can’t help but think how striking the similarities are between you and your character “BJ” on MASH. The book, unequivocably, gets 5 stars (I may blog about it - 1,000 hits a week...who knows who I can influence to read it).

Finally, though we DO share commonalities in our social and political beliefs, we also share differences. But that’s beside the point. Your unwavering passion for your beliefs is admirable. I love the word “passion” and I love passionate people – even those I disagree with on certain issues. (There’s a reason I named my blog, PASSION = TRUTH). I would follow you into a firestorm because I know, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that you would have my back, as I would have yours. Nobody’s perfect. You nor I. But I find you to be an honorable man (which is the same word your son used when I had those beers with him a few years ago). THAT is an important character trait.

Ha – you’ll get no argument from me that I believe you’re lucky to have Shelley in your life. But – she’s also very lucky to have you in her’s.

When’s the next book comin’ out, dammit!!??? I’m ready for more…

Best regards,
Jeff Ircink

PS – if you ever run into Mule again (or a relative) give her/him my best

And yes - Mike emailed me back. If you click on the Amazon banner at the top of the blog page, you can order Mike's book from there.

Women Celebs I Love #6 - Linda Hardy.

Never heard of her before last night. Know nothing about her, but after seeing her in the very strange French sci-flick, Immortal, I'm hooked.

What do I know? She's extremely attractive and my gut tells me she's a together, nice person - subtle, understated acting approach. She's French and the former 1992 Miss France. Most of her films are in French. That's about it. Married? Single? Who knows - there's very little information about her on the Internet.

Now this movie I saw last night - Immortal (2004, English spelling)...strange one. It's not hard to follow but just hard to see the director's vision in how all the components fit together. Directed by artist Enki Bilal and based upon his graphic novel, "La Foire aux immortels" (The Carnival of Immortals), the film combines live action footage with computer animation, and received mixed reviews. It is notable as being one of the first major films to be shot entirely on a "digital backlot", blending live actors with computer generated surroundings. Immortal goes one step further than those films, however, in also having live actors interacting with semi photo-realistic CGI "humans".

(Jake or Tony - must I place a movie title in quotations marks? I'm tiring of this and think I'll opt not to.)

Take a gander at the Immortal trailer.

Hardy sort of evokes, for me, the look of 60's sex starlet, actress Claudia Cardinale. If you're a film buff you know Claudia. North African by birth, Italian by nationality, most of her films were in Italian or French, but she's known in the U.S. for such flicks as Once Upon A Time in the West and The Pink Panther.

Tim Meadows is the antithesis of funny. He is anti-funny. And he's not from Wisconsin.

I watched "Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story" last night. Great flick. I laughed a ton. John C. Reiley's funny. But I stopped laughing whenever Tim Meadows was on the screen. I always do. I thought he sucked on SNL and couldn't figure out why he lasted 10 years on the show (he wrote as well - and that even sucked).

Seriously...I have feces funnier than this guy. Inappropriate comment? Possibly. But so is Tim Meadows practicing comedy and charging people to see him be funny.

I know - it's a picture of the late Chris Farley, who was a contemporary of Meadow's. He was funny. His left testicle was funnier than Meadows. But whose isn't? I just couldn't rationalize putting a picture of Meadows on my blog. He makes me cry and get angry. Farley makes me laugh. And Farley's from Wisconsin. So is Gene Wilder. Funny guys. Spencer Tracy was from Wisconsin and he wasn't even a comedian and he was funnier than Meadows.

Perhaps if Tim had been born in Wisconsin....no, can't do anything about that now. He could move there - I mean, if he wanted to be funnier, right?

Giamatti, Linney Take Home the Naked Actor.

The Screen Actors Guild Award - they both won. Boy, ya just can't keep that "John Adams" mini-series down, can ya? Let's see...that's an Emmy, Golden Globe and now a SAG Award for both actors. Hard to believe some television critics thought that mini-series dull and boring.

By the way, someone tell me why the television show "24" is included in the category of "motion picture/mini-series"? Had Kiefer Sutherland won over anyone else in that category I would have had a shit fit. I understand the premise behind the show "24" but it is neither a motion picture nor is it a mini-series in the way you typically think of a TV mini-series. How long has this been going on? Did they remove "made-for-television" so a show like "24" could be included in this category? And, if shows episodic television shows in the vain of "24" are considered "mini-series", doesn't that detract from the real mini-series programs?

Nothing against Sutherland or the show. It's just that it should be listed under TV drama, that's all.

"Change" SHE believes in. Miss USA turns pornstar.

Miss USA 1991, Kansas-ian Kelli McCarty has decided to try something different as far as talent competition goes - she's entered the world of porn. She signed a deal with Vivid in LA and already has one flick under wraps - or maybe I should say, out of wraps.

“I enjoy acting, and I really like sex, so this was the perfect opportunity to combine two of my passions. " McCarty appeared on the soap, "Passions" for seven years, among other stints.

"Where'd ya go Pop Culture Chick #1, "Alice" in Tom Petty video, "Don't Come Around Here No More"?"

Actress Wish Foley portrayed "Alice" in this Tom Petty video from 1985. Can't find a dang thing on the Internet about her. Her IMDB entry lists this video as her only work.

Anyone know what happened to Ms. Foley?

UPDATE: I'm turning this into a blog series. If you have any suggestions, email me at irc_64@hotmail.com. This is a "pop culture babes" feature only. I have no interest in what Estelle Getty from the "Golden Girls" is up to. Wait - she just passed away.
