Passion = Truth? How Jeffrey James Francis Ircink Sees The World? I love when people are passionate about something. That surging of emotion is the one honest measure of what truth is. It's a truthful display of how a person really feels about something or someone at that particular moment. That passion IS truth.

"Days of Future Passed". 45 years & still a classic.

November 2012 marks the 45th anniversary of the landmark album by The Moody Blues...Days of Future Passed. If you're not familiar with the album, you may recollect two songs - "Nights in White Satin" and "Tuesday Afternoon". "Satin" has reached #1 on Billboard on three separate occasions and most "Moody" fans consider it their greatest song.

My father, who played lead guitar and sang lead vocals in the Glen Lemar Trio from the late 1950's to the early 1960's, loved this album. When Brother Jason and I were very young, my dad used to make us listen to it WITH the stereo headphones on. "Listen to the album from start to finish," he'd say. "But we don't wanna listen to the whole album," we'd counter. "It's a concept album (like we knew what he was talking about!) You have to listen from start to finish! Now listen to it!".

Haha...I'm glad we did. Days of Future Passed is indeed a concept album. From the very first song, "The Day Begins" to the the last song, "Satin", the album depicts the day in the life of one man. And the album is peppered with drummer Graeme Edge's poetry, like "Late Lament":

Breathe deep the gathering gloom
Watch lights fade from every room
Bedsitter people look back and lament
Another day's useless energy spent.

Impassioned lovers wrestle as one,
Lonely man cries for love and has none.
New mother picks up and suckles her son,
Senior citizens wish they were young.

Cold hearted orb that rules the night,
Removes the colors from our sight.
Red is grey and yellow white,
But we decide which is right.
And which is an illusion?

Left to right:  Mike Pinder, Justin Hayward, Ray Thomas, Graeme Edge, John Lodge. Pinder left the band around 1978 and Thomas retired in 2002.

Catch up on the Moodies in this recent article. I'm now 48 and my brother is 46. The Moody Blues continue to be one of my favorite bands (Hayward, Edge and Lodge continue to perform), having seen them many times in concert (most recently at Summerfest in Milwaukee in 2011). I cherish the band love and their music. If you haven't heard the album (or want to refresh your memory), you can listen on Spotify here. Or just look for it on YouTube. And of course, you'll wanna listen from beginning to end, straight through.

Avril Lavigne's just asking for a beating.

Wait - I guess 5 people already did that. Read about it here. See what her face looked like post beating here.

Singer Avril Lavigne graced the November 2010 Maxim cover and the picture above was one of the featured shots of Lavigne inside. The story of Avril's ass being kicked - and this pictorial - are old news. However, someone posted this article from NPR today, discussing the wave of profanity in songs this past year and I thought the article tied in nicely with the Avril-flipping-the-bird-picture + her getting beat up in Hollywood.

Rock and Roll has always had its bad asses. Elvis, The Stones, The Sex Pistols, The Who, Def Leppard, Grace Slick, whatever. That's nothing new.

This flipping the bird shit with celebs. I don't get it. Am I supposed to feel threatened by Lavigne? Am I supposed to respect her more because she's a "bad ass"? Or like her more? Or go buy her albums because she's "cool"? I understand Lavigne's concerts and albums have been in decline. Maybe that's why she's upped the badness.

I'm not impressed. A small child can be taught to flip his or finger up. People who are "bad" don't have to be overt about it. They don't have to flip you off or use profane language. When Avril and her boytoy, Brody Jenner, got their asses kicked earlier this year, maybe Avril flipped the wrong people off and pissed them off. Maybe the "bad ass" got her ass kicked by the real bad asses.

She makes me laugh.

The Buckinghams! The Grass Roots! The Association! Mark Lindsay of Paul Revere & the Raiders! The Turtles!

It's The Happy Together Tour 2011 at the Wisconsin State Fair!

My friend Michelle and I took in this 60's/early 70's flashbook concert (2 1/2 hours worth) last night at the Wisconsin State Fair. 1st tier of the grandstands (still not close enough). If you know me you know I like classic rock/oldies. Was never a HUGE fan of The Turtles, The Association or The Buckinghams but each had a few tunes I dug. But when it comes to The Raiders and The Grass Roots - BIG FAN. Which made the concert all the more painful for me as Grass Roots lead singer Rob Grill passed away on July 11. Nuts. However, the rest of the bands were in fine voice (including "The Grass Roots" which was really nothing more than a cover band w/o Grill).

The highlight for me was watching Mark Lindsay (who turned 69 in March) run around the stage like it was 1968. Really, really a pleasurable night of music. THIS IS ALL FOR YOU, ROB GRILL!

You can look up the bands on the Internet to see what hits they had....and there were a lot. One quick factoid on each:

1.  In the entire history of Rock n' Roll, only 9 bands (including The Beatles) have charted more hits on Billboard's Hot 100 than The Grass Roots.

2.  BMI accredited The Associations' "Never My Love" as having the 2nd most US airplay in the 20th Century.

3.  Paul Revere & The Raiders hold the record for the most TV appearances by anyone in the 1960's - over 750. "Indian Reservation" became Columbia's biggest-selling single for almost a decade.

4.  In 1967, The Buckinghams were named by Billboard magazine as "The Most Listened to Band in America."

5.  The Turtles hit song, "Happy Together" , was lent to this tour since it began in 1984. The two lead singers ("Flo & Eddie) performed with Frank Zappa for many years after their success with The Turtles.

Here's a couple vids of each of the bands playing at least one of their top songs: Paul Revere & The Raiders' "Indian Reservation", The Buckinghams' "Hey Baby" , The Grass Roots' "Midnight Confessions", The Associations' "Along Comes Mary" and The Turtles' "Elenore".

TGIF! presents...Carl Palmer of ELP on the drums!

Impressive. Palmer is credited with being one of the foremost drummers who emerged from the 1960's and is currently on tour with Asia, the 80's band he co-founded. You may recall this Emerson, Lake & Palmer tune.

Why the USPS is broke.

Inability to get my DVD to me in an appropriate amount of time. WTF?

My package - a DVD of The T.AM.I. Show (first-time release) - arrived in Cincinnatti, OH on April 28th and JUST arrived in Forest Park, IL yesterday, March 18th. That's 3 WEEKS (and I'm not including weekends). It's a 5-hour drive between Cincinnatti and Forest Park.

It's 1 1/2 hours from Forest Park to Waterford.

Wonder how long that's gonna take?

Wisconsin native & pioneer of electric guitar, Les Paul, dies.

Les Paul was an American jazz guitarist, inventor, writer and musician. He was a pioneer in the development of the solid-body electric guitar which "made the sound of rock and roll possible." Paul was a member of the Grammy Hall of Fame, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and the National Inventors Hall of Fame.

And he was from Waukesha, WI. Les was 93. Rock & Roll owes this man a debt of gratitude.

My favorite pictures of Heart - Ann (right) & Nancy Wilson.

My #1 favorite picture of Heart is...

...followed by...

And I've always been in love with Nancy. Now can anyone tell me why Heart hasn't been selected to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame? I don't think they've even been nominated. They broke boundaries in as much as holding their own in a male-dominated genre. Or The Moody Blues, for that matter ("no other band consistently mixed rock with orchestral elements so well; at their best, the Moodies were also great songwriters")? Or The Zombies ("1968's Odessey and Oracle has finally gained a rep as one of the greatest albums of all time, helped usher in "progressive rock")? Or Chicago ("the urban-rock sound of the early Seventies owes everything to Chicago, as does any rock group with horns, as well as any jam band")? I'm not sure The Moodies, The Zombies or Chicago have been nominated either. The Beastie Boys have been nominated (1x) and Chic has been nominated 5x.

(Commentary in parenthesis are from Robert Fontenot from About.com. And I agree with all of them.)

Tom Petty and the Hearbreakers' "Don't Come Around Here No More".

Someone explain to me why imeem.com has every one of Tom Petty's songs - the full song - and yet it only has a :17 second sampler of "Don't Come Around Here No More"? My favorite Tom Petty song.

AND, I can't post the video from YouTube either. Ole Tom Petty must not go for that public domain/free usage shit. Huh.

Amy Winehouse naked. Ummm....no thank you.

Troubled Amy Winehouse has posed for a nude photo shoot to raise breast cancer awareness among young women. The singer appears naked in the April issue of British magazine Easy Living after she stripped off for photographer Carolyn Djangoly. In the black and white snapshot, Winehouse is captured playing a guitar, which covers her genitals, while two pieces of duct tape cover her nipples. The 24-year-old isn't the only celebrity posing naked for the campaign - singer Sade and actress Helena Bonham Carter also removed their clothing for the picture project.

Now - I like her music. Her voice hearkens back to another era and - for a white woman - is as soulful as any black female singer. And the breast cancer cause is wonderful. But to see Winehouse who, I think, looks as if she's suffering from malnutrition, naked? Uh-uh.

One more thing: what is it with female celebrities who pose "naked" for Playboy but don't show anything? Seriously, if you're in Playboy and you're making a big deal about how you did it to capture a moment when you were really "hot", then I wanna see bush. Don't cover it up with your leg or a leaf or your hand. Put up or don't pose. Women are posing left and right wearing next-to-nothing in GQ, Vanity Fair, Esquire, among other magazines, and they cover up those "questionable" areas. That's OK. But if you pose for a nudie magazine, I want to see you NUDE.

Which begs me to ask the other question (a question asked by many, I suppose): what is it about a woman's nipple that's the make or break body part when it comes to nudity in magazines or on film? You can show an entire breast but not the nipple. What IS the deal with the nipple?

The Ventures. The DC5, Madonna, John Cougar and Leonard Cohen on their way to the R&R Hall of Fame

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Pop star Madonna, folk singer Leonard Cohen, rocker John Mellencamp, British pop band The Dave Clark Five and instrumental group The Ventures will be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on Monday.

Artists become eligible for the Hall of Fame 25 years after the release of their first single or album and are represented in an exhibition at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame museum in Cleveland, Ohio. "The 2008 inductees are trailblazers -- all unique and influential in their genres," said Joel Peresman, Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Foundation president. "From poetry to pop, these five acts demonstrate the rich diversity of rock and roll."

For '60s British band The Dave Clark Five -- Dave Clark, Lenny Davidson, Rick Huxley, Denis Payton and Mike Smith -- the induction will be bittersweet after lead singer Smith, 64, died late last month from pneumonia. He had been paralyzed from the waist down after suffering a spinal cord injury in 2003.

(Wait! There's more...)

He was extremely excited and honoured to have been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and I am glad that he will be remembered as a Hall of Famer because he was in so many ways,"
Smith's agent, Margo Lewis, said when he died.

The Dave Clark Five topped the British charts in 1965 with "Glad All Over" and were described by the foundation as "an enormous pop phenomenon" before disbanding in 1970. The group has sold more than 50 million albums to date. The band will be inducted by actor Tom Hanks and there will be a special performance in its honour.

While The Dave Clark Five and Mellencamp had been nominated for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame before, this was the first year Madonna was eligible. She will be inducted by pop star Justin Timberlake and Iggy & The Stooges will perform on her behalf.

Madonna, 49, made her debut in 1982 and her first album "Madonna" included hits such as "Holiday," "Borderline" and "Lucky Star" which helped her become one of the best-selling pop artists, with more then 200 million albums sold worldwide. She chose not to perform at the ceremony.

Mellencamp released his first album in 1976 and has often sung about the flawed American dream, which led the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Foundation to dub him a "symbol of the hopes, struggles and passions of America's heartland."

"I'm very honoured and pleased to be recognized this way, especially among people whom I greatly admire," Mellencamp said on his Web site, www.mellencamp.com. He will be inducted by entertainer Billy Joel and will perform at the ceremony.

Cohen, a gravel-voiced Canadian whose songs tell of love and sex, faith and betrayal, is among the most literary of songwriters. He published four books of poetry and two novels before trying music, partly to escape life as a starving artist. The foundation described him as "folk rock icon of the singer songwriter movement." He will be inducted by Lou Reed and Irish folk singer Damien Rice will perform for him.

Hits by the Ventures -- Bob Bogle, Nokie Edwards, Gerry McGee, Mel Taylor, Don Wilson -- include "Walk Don't Run" and "Hawaii Five-O" and the foundation credits the band with defining instrumental guitar rock in the 1960s.

The group will be inducted by John Fogerty and will perform at the New York City ceremony. Along with the five performers, the song writing and producing team of Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff will be inducted in the non-performer category and the late Little Walter in the "sideman" category for his "pioneering use of the microphone (that) helped establish the modern blues harmonica."
