Passion = Truth? How Jeffrey James Francis Ircink Sees The World? I love when people are passionate about something. That surging of emotion is the one honest measure of what truth is. It's a truthful display of how a person really feels about something or someone at that particular moment. That passion IS truth.

Happy Birthday, Denny!

Happy Birthday, Dennis Wilson! December 4, 1944 - December 28, 1983. Drummer & co-founder of The Beach Boys. He is the BB I most identify with. You are missed - and loved, Denny.

Check out this re-imagined version of Denny's "Forever". Also, check out his solo PACIFIC OCEAN BLUE (1977) here. POB has appeared on several "best-of" lists including Robert Dimery's "1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die," Mojo's "Lost Albums You Must Own" and "70 of the Greatest Albums of the 70s" lists. In 2005, it was ranked #18 in GQ's "The 100 Coolest Albums in the World Right Now!" list.

Happy Birthday, Dennis!

The only surfer in The Beach Boys, Dennis Wilson (brother to Carl and Brian) banged the drums harder than anyone, according to legendary session drummer Hal Blaine. Hard to believe Denny would've been 68 today. Many consider him the heart and soul of The Beach Boys, lost at the early age of 39. He's my favorite of the "Boys...we never met but I have met two of his sons and one ex-wife (Barbara) on a couple occasions and I knew another ex-wife, model/actress Karen Lamm the last year of her life (she passed in 2001 at the age of 49).

A film about Dennis' life is in pre-production starring Aaron Eckert. What a ride that will be for Mr. Eckert. I miss Dennis every day. He was quite the writer/producer, evident in his solo albums, Pacific Ocean Blue and Bamboo). Here's one of Denny's most popular solo efforts, "River Song", featuring behind-the-scenes recording and other vid shots.

"They say I live a fast life. Maybe I just like a fast life. I wouldn’t give it up for anything in the world. It won’t last forever, either. But the memories will."

Surf's always up with you, Denny. Peace - and Happy Birthday, brotha.

Happy Birthday, Denny!

Dennis' birthday was yesterday. One of the Wilson brothers who founded The Beach Boys, Dennis passed away in 1983, not quite 40. The blond in the video is his wife at the time, model/actress Karen Lamm. She passed away in 2001 of heart failure. I knew her the last year of her life. She once said to me flirtingly, "back in the day, I would've went after you" . Meaning me. One of the most flattering comments I've ever heard.

"River Song" is from Dennis' solo album, Pacific Ocean Blue. It's been reissued and it is excellent.

"Dear California, I'm dumping you."

Saw the most apropo opinion piece in the Los Angeles Times on August 16th. I was planning to post something on my blog in this vein but another writer beat me to the punch.

In Candice Reed's column, "Dear California, I'm dumping you.", Reed extols all the wondrous reasons she moved to California - then turns on each and every reason (like that UCLA couple during my visit to Cali in 1994 when Wisconsin beat UCLA in the Rose Bowl - Tom and I still can't figure out what we did to that couple). This paragraph sums up some of the reasons why I am departing this state and the City of Angels:

"I’ve been thinking about this for a very long time, and I’ve come to the conclusion that we should go our separate ways. I thought I loved you and it would last forever, but I was so very wrong…You’ve totally lost perspective, and I’m sinking into depression! We can’t pay our bills, and the phone is ringing off the hook with creditors calling from all over the world. Children across the state are losing healthcare, more than 766,300 Californians lost their jobs in the last year, and we’re at the top of the foreclosure charts. You need to change, and you refuse to admit it. For the first time in our relationship, I’m embarrassed to say that we are together…So that’s it, California, it’s over. You’ve cost me too much. I’m starting over, but I can see happy times ahead. Like we once had…You could be a great state again but I can’t wait in order for you to turn it around."

She pretty much hit the nail on the head. Add to that the runaway production in the entertainment industry, my eye injury (which made me feel like damaged goods and no I do not need a therapist), the onslaught of illegal aliens on every corner, a bankrupt city that seems to find money in its coffers to pay for the King of Pop's $1.4 million memorial service, and the traffic congestion and THAT...is a wrap.

Los Angeles isn't representative of the state of California. I'm a firm believer that if you put LA inside a snow globe and shipped it off on a one-way ticket to Greenland that it would survive just nicely THERE and no one would miss it HERE.

That being said, there's much I will miss. My best friends, Donovan & Maria & their two daughters, Grace and Gwyneth (my god daughter), other friends including Susie & Jay, Maria's parents and siblings - Mike and Bill and their families, Tat, Michael Gregory, Marla, Dave & Linda Parke, Stephen Carver, Rick the photographer, Michael Carrera, Bruce Johnson & Bill Baumann (my ex-bosses), the Nowak clan in Santa Barbara, and others.

Speaking of Santa Barbara - what a gem of a place! How I will miss the convenience of jumping into my car and driving up the 101 for an hour and a half and escaping LA (the Santa Inez wine country will be sorely missed by moi). Being a history buff and actor, it was far-out being in a city where so much history in the entertainment industry took place. To know that Dean Martin always ate at this table or that Brian Wilson lived in that house in Bel Air. I'll miss the intimate venues where you can catch a music act like Berlin, Gordon Lightfoot or The Zombies - and not just IF they roll through your town on a tour they go on once every five years. Or The Smoke House and Formosa Cafe (any eatery for that matter really) where you can run into just about any celebrity on any day of the week. The weather and the beaches - the goes without saying.

I'm fortunate to have been involved with the Carl Wilson (The Beach Boys) Cancer Foundation. Or to have struck up a friendship and mentor-ish relationship with guys like The Waltons creator, Earl Hamner, Jr. or actor Bo Svenson. I think it's cool that I lived in a guesthouse in Bel Air for seven years and lived a very surreal life...experiencing a way of life very few people get to experience. It's unfortunate that the last two years of all that was soured because of the bitch who lives there. (That's one feeling I can't shake - I want that bitch to rot in hell.)

Sorry. Where was I? California. Yeh, I do feel some sense of accomplishment after having lived in your state for 11 1/4 years. Being The Beach Boys groupie that I am, it felt like the right place to be...to experience. I met Brian Wilson and rubbed elbows with Beach Boys' ex-wives, children, ex-/current band members (CW Cancer Foundation) and had the honor of becoming friends with Dennis Wilson's ex-wife, Karen Lamm about a year before she died. I met Ricci Martin, the son of my favorite all-around entertainer, Dean Martin, and feel fortunate to call him "a friend". I got my SAG card (like everyone else in the state), met a few celebs, shared some awesome Brett Favre moments with Donovan & Maria at their home in Tujunga, started a blog in March 2007, started a career as playwright - finishing 4 full-length plays, one play adapted from a movie, a one-act, seven short plays, published twice and traveled to Cedar Rapids, Ireland, Miami and Seattle to watch my work performed by others. I even won the jackpot as a "seal trainer" on To Tell The Truth.

No - I never met Mel. Never got to see The Walton's house on the Warner lot. Never tried surfing (sharks). Never made it north of Monterey. Never got laid in Santa Barbara (well, I didn't). Never saw a performance at the Greek Theatre or been to LACMA or The Getty. Blah, blah, blah. But I did a lot of other shit.

Next week my brother arrives and we'll do some visiting around Cali, then pack up the car (the bulk of my belongings have been shipped home already) and make the long drive back to Wisconsin. So - "all good things...", as the saying goes. And unless you (Cali) fall into the ocean, I will return at least once a year to visit you and my god daughter, my extended family in Santa Barbara and friends. Maybe then I'll be able to do some of the things I never got around to doing when I lived here.

In the words of the great Dennis Wilson, drummer and co-founder of The Beach Boys (like I was gonna end this post with anything but something Beach Boy-related), from his 1977 tune "River Song" :

"...You know it's rough gettin' round this place, So crowded I can hardly breathe, You can only see about a block or two, In LA that's the truth, I'm lookin' for some country life, Some kickin' room, no more city life, I want the river...".

For Earth Day - "Pacific Ocean Blue", by Dennis Wilson (1977).

It's Earth Day today. Listen to what Dennis Wilson of The Beach Boys was singing about back in 1977. Get out of the microcosm that's your own world and think about the rest of us who are here enjoying the Earth with you.

For my cousin Michael...

I found out this evening that my younger cousin Michael died. He would've been 40 tomorrow. This song is for him - Dennis Wilson's "Farewell My Friend". Listen to it...it's a gorgeous song. He wrote it when his friend, Pop Hinsche died. I will miss you, Michael. You are with God now - and happy.

Wrapped in a churro, read what Mojo says about Foo Fighter Taylor Hawkins, Dennis Wilson and POB!

I say that because the clipping I received from my buddy Nicko in CR (scratch and sniff below) from Mojo smelled like those Mexican desserts - churros. It was either the bubble mailer the CDs he burned for me came in or the Verbatim CDRs.

In December, I blogged about Rolling Stone's Reissue of the Year for 2008 went to Dennis Wilson's Pacific Ocean Blue (POB). Dennis - co-founder and drummer of The Beach Boys who passed away in 1983 - originally released POB as his first solo album in 1977 to wide critical acclaim, proving Dennis was more than a boozer, womanizer, partier and surfer-dude-drummer.

The interview above from Mojo is with Taylor Hawkins of Foo Fighters. Hawkins had a big hand in finishing Dennis' Holy Man, a tune meant to be on Wilson's second solo album, Bambu, but was left unfinished (as was Bambu). Here's what Taylor Hawkins had to say about Dennis and POB.

Incidentally, here's some of the other reissues that made the RS list: #2 Bob Dylan's Tell Tale Signs, #7 Marvin Gaye's Here, My Dear #11 Little Willie John's Nineteen Sixty Six, #13 Willie Nelson's One Hell of A Ride, and #16 Gene Vincent's Million Shades of Blue.

:) - just can't keep those Beach Boys down, can ya?

POB is Rolling Stone's Reissue of the Year!

Dec. 15th, 2008. Rolling Stone magazine announced that late co-founder and The Beach Boys drummer, Dennis Wilson's first solo album from 1978, Pacific Ocean Blue, is the Rolling Stone Reissue of the Year! Also, Brian Wilson's solo album released this year, That Lucky Old Sun, made RS' Albums of the Year list.

"Everything that I am or will ever be is in the music. If you want to know me, just listen." - Dennis Wilson, drummer, The Beach Boys

Pacific Ocean Blue (POB) was reissued June 16. You've never heard "a Beach Boy" like this; you never heard Dennis sound like this. If you consider yourself a student of music you MUST get this album. First released in 1977, POB was re-released in 1991 for six months. I got a copy a couple years ago from my friend John Bell in Philly, along with a bootlegged copy of Bambu, Dennis' 2nd album that never saw the light of day.

But now this...POB - remastered. All of us Beach Boys/Dennis Wilson fans are ecstatic. I can't drag you down to the record store and make you buy it. If you know me - trust me on this one.

POB includes a Deluxe Edition, Two-CD set of 33 tracks with Limited Edition First-Run Collector's Packaging. This collection contains never officially released tracks from Dennis' Bambu (or Bamboo as it has been known) album which only existed as bootlegs for decades. Features "Holy Man", an unfinished track that never received Dennis' vocal part, with Taylor Hawkins of the Foo Fighters laying down brand new vocals. There's also a 50 page, full color book with two brand new essays and never-before-seen photos and memorabilia. If you'd like, go to Amazon and watch the 7-minute video on POB - it'll wet your appetite.

"In all those years since Pacific Ocean Blue became a rare gem, I have been eager to make it more widely available," says James William Guercio, producer and owner of Caribou Records, who served then and now as executive producer on POB. "The music that caught the ear of critics and fans in 1977 has fallen from popular consciousness in the last two decades, and it has long been due this incredible treatment. The devotion that the Legacy Recordings crew has shown to both the official album and the huge number of unreleased tracks is a testament to the strength of Dennis' musical genius." For the full article, click here.

Dennis passed away in 1983. I'm lucky to have met two of his ex-wives, one - former model/actress Karen Lamm - I got to know the last year of her life. I've met two of his children, as well as many people who knew him very well - including Dennis' close friend, Ed Roach, and John Stebbins, author of the book, Dennis Wilson - The Real Beach Boy. I am proud to call them my friends - as I am proud to call Dennis "a friend". Those who love him, his spirit and his music revel in this album. I hope you get a chance to listen to it. Search my blog for other stories on Dennis - there have been a few. Come on, man. How often do I ask for favors, huh?

Peace & Love, Dennis - and congrats!

Happy Birthday, Denny!

The incomparable drummer Dennis Wilson, who with brothers Brian Wilson and Carl Wilson, cousin Mike Love and Al Jardine, formed The Beach Boys. Dennis was the only one who surfer; he suggested "surfing" as the theme for the first hit song, cleverly titled, "Surfin'".

He passed away in 1983. I miss him terribly. You know how when you've never met someone but have an idea of what they may have been like? Dennis' music is truly a window into his soul. I never got the chance to meet him but I'm fortunate to have met and talked with people, at length, who did know him - his ex-wives, Barbara Wilson and Karen Lamm; his sons; John Stebbins, author of Dennis Wilson, The Real Beach Boy and Ed Roach, friend to Dennis and photographer for The Beach Boys, among others. Whatever picture I had painted in my head about Dennis was true - all of it. Here are some of Dennis' more lively quotes:

"They say I live a fast life. Maybe I just like a fast life. I wouldn't give it up for anything in the world. It won't last forever, either. But the memories will."

"Brian Wilson is the Beach Boys. He is the band. We're his fucking messengers. He is all of it. Period. We're nothing. He's everything."

"I made a dollar a day sweeping a laundry out. Then we made a record that was number two in Los Angeles. We got so excited hearing it on the radio that Carl threw up."

"I hope that the karma will fuck up Mike Love's meditation forever. That album is an embarrassment to my life. It should self-destruct."
- 1979 on M.I.U.

"If there wasn't The Beach Boys and there wasn't music, I would not even talk to them. But through music I fell in love with my brothers."

Thank you. Also, below is the URL for perhaps Dennis' most popular song, Forever. The words are listed.

And, here's the URL to John Stamo' version of, Forever, that he sang on, Full House. A little more upbeat for the times, but still a beautiful song. The Beach Boys are backing him up - you can hear Carl Wilson's angelic tenor voice backing Stamos on the last line before that final jam.

Namedropping

My best friend, Tom Kazar, lived in Long Beach for 8 years or so right after we graduated from college. When I moved to LA in 1998, he told me, “Irc, keep one thing in mind – you have everything you could ever want at your fingertips in Los Angeles. Enjoy it while you’re there”. So, ever since I moved here, people have asked me, “have you met anyone famous?”. Here’s the list – saves me the trouble of sitting there with a dumb look on my face when I’m being grilled. NOTE: These are folk I’ve actually met and had a meaningful discussion with. Don’t ask me about what.

Brian Wilson – The Beach Boys “genius”, Wendy Wilson, Carnie Wilson, Chynna Phillips, Marilyn Wilson – Brian Wilson’s ex, Barbara Wilson – Dennis Wilson’s ex, Justyn Wilson – Carl Wilson’s son, Jonah Wilson – Carl Wilson’s son, Ricci Martin – Dean Martin’s son, Jeanne Martin – Dean Martin’s ex, Carl B. Wilson – Dennis Wilson’s son, Michael Wilson – Dennis Wilson’s son, Billie Hinsche – former musician with the Beach Boys and now touring with Al Jardine of the Beach Boys, Anne Hinsche – Carl Wilson’s ex, Jeff Foskett – singer/musician with Brian Wilson, Jay – owner of Chez Jay’s - Dennis Wilson’s favorite hangout, Ed Figuero – former drummer for the Beach Boys, Desi Arnaz Jr., Karen Lamm – Dennis Wilson’s ex-wife, former model/actress, wonderful woman, Jon Stebbins – author of The Real Beach Boy, bio of Dennis Wilson, Alan Boyd – producer of Endless Harmony, Beach Boys bio on VH1, Ed Roach – photographer for the Beach Boys, Jerry Schilling – Memphis Mafia/Elvis’ former mgr., Carl Wilson’s former mgr., Steve Kalinich – co-writer with Dennis Wilson, The Honey’s – Brian Wilson’s girl surf band in the 60’s, Jan Berry & Dean Torrance – Jan & Dean, 60’s surf band pioneers, Earl Hamner Jr. – creator of The Walton’s, Michael Learned – mother in The Walton’s, Jon Walmsley – Jim-Bob in The Walton’s, Seymour Cassell – starred in a lot of John Cassavettes films, The Life Aquatic, Rob Reiner, Merv Griffin, Eugene Levy – SCTV, Waiting for Guffman, Carlos Alazraqui - the voice of the Taco Bell Chihuahua, Reno 911!, Bruce Boxleitner, Megan Gallagher – China Beach, Jack Klugman, Bruce Dern, Jeff Conaway, Dominic Monaghan, Cory Feldman, Mike Farrell – son of Mike Farrell from MASH, Dan Lauria – father from The Wonder Years, Alley Mills – mother from The Wonder Years, Richard Roxburgh – Van Helsing, Mission Impossible II, Tim Conway, Ernest Borgnine, Michelle Phillips – Mamas & the Papas, Doug McKeon - the boy in On Golden Pond, Dick Martin – from Rowan & Martin’s Laugh-In, Scott Bakula, Ashton Kutcher, Steven Lisberger – Screenwriter of Tron, Martinez, A. – The Cowboys, Port Charles, Santa Barbara, Don Cornelius – creator and host, Soul Train, Corbin Bernsen – LA Law, Major League, Joe Lando – Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman .

I think I'm tickled the most by the Beach Boys-related celebs as I've been a Beach Boy groupie since high school. Everyone was extremely laid back - like old friends, and I've met them all (as has my brother, Jason) on several occasions while involved with the Carl Wilson Cancer Foundation. Eugene Levy and I had a succinct conversation while standing at the bathroom urinals at Rob Reiner's production company in Beverly Hills. Earl Hamner is an avid fisherman and has a beautiful, trophy marlin on the wall in his office in Studio City. What a thrill it was meeting him! If you didn't already know, the TV series, The Waltons, was based on Earl's real life in Virginia, and Earl IS John-Boy, who was my inspiration to major in Journalism in college. John-Boy, that is. Well...Earl, too, I guess. Also, that was Earl's voice you heard narrating each episode. Ricci Martin, Dean Martin's son, is a wonderful man and a chip off the old block (I'll get to Deano in another blog). Karen Lamm - well I'm gonna keep most of that story to myself. Embodiment of the 70's Californian girl, she was a model/actress and graced billboards, television and magazine ads, while hanging out with Jack Nicholson and Elliott Gould, and she was married to Dennis Wilson of the Beach Boys twice. I first met Karen at her apartment in West LA, and as she eyed me up and down, she said that if she had met me "back in the day" she woulda "went for me in a second"...which has to be one of the most flattering things anyone has ever shared with me. Her heart gave out in 2001 and most certainly was taken from this life much too early - she was 49. I went to her funeral and the reception that followed at her sister's house. Elliott Gould, Judd Nelson and Catherine Bach were in attendance. I'm thankful I got to know her that last year of her life...and I think of her often.

I probably missed a couple. There's a bunch I've seen from afar (Tom Cruise - 20 yards) or seen and just said "hi" to (Jack Lemmon, walking his poodle) - but I didn't bother to get into all that. You might have noticed Mel Gibson and Brett Favre are not on the list. Yet.
